With the release of the latest live album, SIMRIT continues to reach new and dramatic heights…while frustrating any of our attempts to try and fit it into categories and concepts. This could very well be their greatest recording achievement yet. With his live-blog of the album, Jai Dev takes us inside.

[av_dropcap1]It[/av_dropcap1] is probably not ordinary to review an album by your wife.

In all honesty, there is no way I would write a review for an album my wife helped to create unless I loved it. So that’s the starting point for this: I’m writing about it because I want as many people to hear it as possible! It’s a selfish motive. I want for people to hear what I hear inside of it. I want others to feel the inspiration I’ve felt while encountering this particular album. So yes my wife is Simrit.

I LOVE HER.

Yet, while writing these thoughts, I simply feel like a fan, a yogi and someone who loves live music almost more than anything else. These two worlds collide in the SIMRIT experience unlike anything else I know of. (We use SIMRIT to refer to the full band. Simrit is the person…also the lead singer and primary song-writer.)

Secondly, it’s not a review. I ‘live-blogged’ below while listening to the album as a whole…from the first to the last note in one sitting.

I encourage you to turn on the album and listen along as you read my live-blog below.

I had already heard early mixes of most, if not all, the songs. Thus, this was not my first time meeting these recordings. It was the first time I got to experience the complete show. Well, actually, the second time…

THE NIGHT OF

[av_dropcap1]T[/av_dropcap1]he day was Saturday, November 9th, 2019. SIMRIT had played the night before in San Francisco. I always go to as many shows as I’m able to. With my teaching work, I often can only get to a couple per tour. For this Fall 2019 Tour, I was fortunate enough to attend a pretty significant amount of shows!

The tour opened in our hometown of Nevada City, CA with a two-night run. The first night was excellent. The second night was transcendent, and the only other show I attended that was at the cosmic heights of this Los Angeles show we’re about to experience together. I also attended the shows in Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, and Encinitas. All were great. None were LA.

We departed the theater in San Francisco sometime after midnight on that Friday and decided to drive half-way to LA before finding a hotel and getting a few hours of sleep before finishing the drive.

When we arrived at the historic Wilshire Ebell Theater in LA on a beautiful and warm Saturday afternoon, everyone was nicely sleep deprived. Sometimes the right amount of sleep deprivation can facilitate great art, particularly of the psychedelic variety! The feeling of the day seemed infused with joy. It felt like a ‘good show day.’ Sometimes you can feel it. After all, the future and the present are ultimately intertwined.

The Wilshire Ebell is a great place. There is a lot of history there, and you can feel it in the walls. In continuous operation since 1927, it’s one of the oldest live performance venues in Los Angeles. From Judy Garland and Julie Andrews to Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Prince, and Michelle Obama: this space has vibes. The women’s club connected to the theater has been there a long time and is said to have been helping to empower women throughout its history. Perhaps that adds to the good energy we felt there.

We had an INCREDIBLE time that night. This is a live concert I will never forget. I spent most of my time dancing with several of our close friends who were also in attendance. Simrit’s parents were sitting nearby me. They too were blown away. What that must be like to watch your precious daughter do THAT!? In a certain way, everyone there felt like family. When a group of people experiences something transcendent together, it creates a special bond—it turns strangers into family.

LIVE-BLOG: SIMRIT – Live in Los Angeles, November 9, 2019

Some important things to know before we get started:

OK, PUSH PLAY!

As soon as the first rhythm notes hit you, it’s apparent that this is serious. It’s heavy, mystic, and moving. A rousing applause welcomes Simrit to the stage, her signature vocals begin to soar, and we’re off.

The feel of this thing right out the gate has me completely locked into the sound. My head is nodding and I immediately feel the goodness of what’s to come.

Agunjul is a perfect opener. It’s an invocation: ‘Salutations to the infinite, who has no name, and lives in all beings.’ A mantric stanza from the most famous poem of the mystic medieval warrior-saint of North India, Guru Gobind Singh. Drummer Devon Ashley sets a rhythm pocket that is tremendously deep—it’s his superpower, simple and pure. Devotees of rhythm will know what I mean.

When people call Simrit’s vocals ‘haunting,’ this is what they mean. She brings this powerful sound current to life.

Mantras are fascinating. First there is the idea of a power inherent in the word, something like an uplifting force, codified within sound, vibrated from the magical instrument that is the human body. Then, there is the idea that the mantric sound was birthed from the wonderful consciousness of a magnificent being, perhaps the source of its innate goodness. Perhaps most importantly, they sound beautiful, and can naturally evoke an elevated or devotional mood. It’s interesting to consider, many of these mantras have been chanted with reverence by countless people throughout time. I don’t know how that affects our experience of them, but I bet it does!

Seamlessly moving out of Agunjul, Prithvi Hai has us launching into orbit. Listening to this as Salif’s kora groove sets the pocket, there is a definite sense the band is firing on all cylinders. There is the groove within the groove…that special something that happens when an entire band is connecting beyond limitations of normal ideas and language. It’s a chemistry, an electricity, an intangible that is felt by everyone present, regardless if they are aware of it.

We’re only getting started: It’s like the scene in any epic just before our heroes are launching into their great battle. Here, the battle is of the spiritual type…the work of wizards or magicians using sounds and songs. There is a spirit to it that goes beyond a normal concert. It feels shamanic, summoning something mysterious. The stuff of both heaven and earth – Prithvi hai, Akash hai!

Naturally to a SIMRIT set, Clandestine is next. The beat drops, dancers fill the aisles of the Wilshire, hearts bursting open, and we’ve achieved lift-off! The spirits are lifted everywhere. Clandestine is simply an exceptional song, and this performance of it holds its own: Shannon’s iconic cello riff, Simrit’s SOULFUL vocals, the rhythm section! The song peaks with Salif’s impressive solo. The whole thing is an expression of the brilliant love that flows through five humans who have genuinely devoted their life to an artistic craft.

As soon as Clandestine comes to a close, the thumping beat of It Is Written wastes no time keeping us going. Just when we thought we may have a rest, the journey continues with some definite force. To me, the It Is Written lyrics set the song’s tone. Inspired by the first stanza of Nanak’s timeless Japji, Simrit and Salif co-wrote this wonderful tune. So much wisdom in the words, and sung with such soul. It’s completely unique, capturing the ancient feel, yet with a wonderful freshness. For me, Simrit’s melodic ode to Nanak towards the end is pure sweetness. She can sing with the best of them, one of those rare artists where technicality and soul are perfectly matched. As I listen, a great wave of love swells throughout my heart. It’s like nectar.

We’re now a full forty minutes in…fully enveloped in the SIMRIT sound, and here comes CCV.

If the end of It Is Written bursts open the heart, CCV dwells in that space. It’s the song of a warrior, longing for the Divine, asking for protection, swimming in the infinite. Here we get to witness Simrit’s melodic genius. It may be her superpower.

A few years ago, Simrit and I spent an afternoon with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, at his home in Maui. The evening before he had attended the concert with Simrit, Salif, and Shannon at the beautiful Makawao Union Church. He absolutely loved it, was probably the last person to leave the venue that night, and suggested we come and hang out the following day. We did. It was a lot of fun and I experienced him to be a genuine brother with a huge heart…and wicked life stories! He told me that Simrit’s melodies were ‘McCartney-esque.’ I know what he means.

The intensity of CCV gives way to Dhan Baba Nanak. I’ve heard the band call it ‘old faithful’…it never disappoints. Its intro is epic, like I’ve never heard prior to this show. When the groove drops, it’s tremendous, with Devon Ashley and Jared May holding a rhythm pocket that will challenge your ability to sit still in your seat! It goes on, every moment wonderful. As the song accelerates we get to witness just how masterful these musicians are, both individually and collectively…all of them. The improvisation and orchestration, somehow all happens together with the spirit of life traveling through us all.

This music just grooves. To me the transition from Baba Nanak to Oh Nayhu is a highlight of the show. It’s worth taking a moment to appreciate the interludes all throughout the show. It is an art-form in and of itself, and this band creates some real magic with them.

Oh Nayhu: This gorgeous Sikh poem is brought to life through the SIMRIT sound in both cosmic and fierce fashion. Their arrangement here is really brilliant and makes this performance shine. It takes you on a journey without ever losing its pocket. The band is on fire. My goodness!

The set ends in the most perfect way with perhaps the most beautiful Sat Narayan I’ve ever heard. It’s as if we emerge into a space of love itself…the bliss, the longing, the pain. Again, melodic beauty. The vocals, kora, guitar, bass, drums…all delivering a truly healing salve for the soul.

If it had ended there, we would have felt fully filled. I would have said it’s a masterpiece. But there’s more…and for me, it is the encore that takes this to another level entirely. Technically it’s three songs in total, but as with the rest of the album should be taken in as a complete composition: Dark Star > All of Myself > Dark Star > Just A Glance Pt. 1

I’m a Deadhead, so I may be biased. See what you think…

The first time this band played Dark Star (the iconic Grateful Dead tune), it was one of the coolest musical moments I can remember. I’ve been to probably more SIMRIT shows than any other person outside of the band and I had never heard this iteration of the group play a cover song. Never cheesy or cliche, when they dropped this on night two of the back-to-back show in Nevada City, CA earlier last year, it really did feel magical. It seemed to me that there were two types of people there: 1) Those who weren’t sure what the music was but knew it was dope, and 2) Lovers of the Grateful Dead scattered through the crowd who as soon as they heard the signature riff, looked around and thought ‘OH FUCK!’ That was the opener of the tour. LA wasn’t the closer, but it was the last show I went to on this tour…what a way to bookend my experience.

The LA 2019 encore is very memorable for me. The crowd was ecstatic. Hearts were wide open, people were in awe, love filled the air. The uniquely SIMRIT Dark Star is so cool. They do it justice, and to me that says a lot.

All of Myself is one of my favorite songs Simrit has written. Through and through it’s a wonderful song. It has all the stuff. This performance of it is among my very favorites…so beautiful…then, wonderfully back into Dark Star to land the spaceship!

That brings us to our finale. Just A Glance Pt. 1 is the jam! Co-written by Simrit and Salif, it draws on a mystic Sufi poem. There are few songs that move me in the way this one does. I know I’m not alone with that sentiment. What a creation! On that night in LA, as with every other night, it brought the house down. It’s a celebration, it’s joy.

We’ve come full circle. The ‘hero’s journey’ is complete. When we return, we do so better than when we left—more love, more wisdom, more life. This album is the stuff of legends. I mean that. It’s that level of artistic greatness that becomes legendary over time.

If you want to come up with some negative critiques of this live album, have at it. For me, it’s perfect. For the band, I know they are never satisfied, always looking for what’s next. That’s their craft. I can’t wait for LA 2021, and every other show for that matter. A transcendent work of art from beginning to end is now immortalized in a recording that’s available to the world. Give thanks for that. Lord knows I‘m grateful to have this sonic treasure to enjoy for the rest of my life.

Super Herbs of Ayurveda: The Healing Powers of India’s Most Legendary Medicinal Plants

You’ve likely heard about them. Perhaps you’ve even experimented with one or more from time to time. Their stories have become so legendary, their unique qualities so unusual, that they are revered by herbalists and healers across the planet.

Ayurveda, the ancient healing science of India, includes a vast collection of herbs within its rich tradition. Yet, there are some herbs that stand on their own as unique treasures. They are the superstar herbs of Ayurveda.  If you take the time to learn about them and how to use them properly, they could become great allies in your life.

Nowadays we’re all used to hearing about the latest medicine or ‘superfood’ that is going to take away all our ailments and give us long-lasting vitality for the rest of our days. Perhaps we try it out, we wonder if we are receiving its benefits, and all too often it is retired to the far corner of our kitchen cabinet never to be opened again.

The reality is that herbs are not part of a coming and going fad. They’ve been used for hundreds of years with great success by skilled healers taking care of their patients, yogis aspiring to experience the great potentials of love and consciousness, and everyday people wishing to experience greater vitality and alleviate the suffering from their lives.

Generally speaking, there are no ‘quick fixes’. Anything with lasting value will require some time, education and consistency. If you’re looking for an instant solution to your challenges, this isn’t for you.  If you’re willing to dig a bit deeper, though, and really work to make a substantive change for yourself, then perhaps you’ll find this useful.

What Is A ‘Super Herb’?

For starters, I’d like to clarify the context for how I’m defining a ‘super herb’. It’s not enough to classify an herb as ‘superb’, without being specific as to what constitutes that classification. In order to do so in a complete way, we have to take a dive (or at least a dip) into the art of Dravya Guna, the wisdom-science of Ayurvedic herbology.

(This article is merely an introduction to The Super Herbs of Ayurveda Webcast in which we’ll be covering all of this and more.)

The 4 Key Energetics Of Every Herb

So for now, consider this. Every herb has four primary characteristics that make up its healing ‘constitution’. Every herb has:

  1. A dominant taste (rasa)
  2. A dominant energy (virya)
  3. A dominant post-digestive effect (vipak)
  4. Unique Intelligence (prabhav)

If you understand these three main characteristics of an herb (or food for that matter), you will have a pretty good understanding of how that herb will operate in your body and mind. While there may be many phenomenal herbs you could potentially choose from, by understanding these three aspects, you’ll be able to determine which of these herbs are going to be ideal for you and your life.

The first way to investigate an herb is through its taste (rasa). Its taste will give us clues as to that herb’s energy (virya). Its energy will tell us if the herb is either heating or cooling to the body/mind. It will tell us if the herb is going to dilate the channels of the body or constrict the channels of the body; will it speed up your digestion, or slow it down.

The taste and energy of the herb will give us insight into its ‘post-digestive effect’ (vipak). The post-digestive effect tells us whether that herb is going to cause a strengthening or a purification to your tissues.

Finally, each herb has its ‘special effects’ (prabhav). This tells us what organs and areas of the body the herb works on, or has an affinity towards. Does the herb alleviate mucous from the respiratory system? Does the herb build sexual stamina? Will it help you rest easy at night after a stressful day? These are examples of the herb’s ‘special effects’. Many people work primarily with the special effect but may overlook the other important energetics of the herb (taste, energy and post-digestive effect). Only with all four aspects do we possess holistic and powerful knowledge about that herb.

Practical Examples

For example, take one of my favorite herbs, licorice. Licorice has a primarily sweet taste (rasa). Most herbs with a sweet taste, licorice included, also have cooling energy (virya). Herbs with a sweet taste and cooling energy typically will have a nurturing/strengthening effect on your tissues (vipak). Generally speaking, it’s a predictable pattern.

How about ginger? Ginger’s ‘taste’ is primarily pungent, or spicy. Most herbs with a spicy taste, ginger included, have heating energy. Herbs with a pungent taste and heating energy tend to have a purifying post-digestive effect, as is the case with ginger.  Another predictable pattern that we find in most cases for most plants that we use for medicinal purposes.

However, sometimes there are exceptions to the rule. In rare circumstances, we discover a herb that doesn’t follow the normal patterns. These unusual occurrences are eye-opening to herbalists and alchemists alike. And this herbal outlier is the first qualification of our ‘super herbs’.

A Revered Vitality Herb

One example of a uniquely patterned ‘super herb’ is Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). We’ll cover several others on the webinar. Ashwagandha’s taste is primarily sweet. While most sweet herbs have cooling energy, Ashwagandha’s energy is warming. Its post-digestive effect is strengthening/nurturing. The vast majority of herbs that are sweet and strengthening, are typically cooling in nature and thus more difficult for the body to metabolize. Not so for Ashwagandha! Its’ gently warming energy makes it easier to digest and easier for the body to benefit from it’s wonderful ‘special effects’: immune system tonic, nervine tonic, aphrodisiac (to name only a few).

Herbal Intelligence

If you think about it, herbs are indeed intelligent…or at the very least agents of intelligence. Why do some herbs benefit the heart, while others benefit the liver? How are certain herbs able to alleviate a swollen prostate gland, while others could repair ulceration in the small intestine? Herbs can be extremely specific, and surprisingly effective. This is the herb’s ‘special effect’ (prabhav) or its unique intelligence.

Our second qualification for a ‘super herb’ is that it has a wide variety of effects on a wide variety of tissues and/or organs. While many ‘common’ herbs have one or two primary effects on an organ system or tissue layer within the body, the super herbs reach far and wide in their impact and effect.

Super herbs often possess ‘polarized benefits’. For instance, Ashwagandha is famous for its ability to both calm and energize. Turmeric can both warm your digestion and cool your inflammation. Triphala both detoxifies and rejuvenates. It is likely the uncommon energetic patterns that these herbs possess that give them the phenomenal ability to provide healing in an opposite, yet complementary direction!

Spiritual Herbology

The final qualification for a super herb is for me, the most important. We’ve already covered the energetic patterns of an herb, but there is also subtle energy that is of crucial importance…a vibrational frequency per se, that determines its effect on the mind and psycho-magnetic field of a human being.

While certain herbs can have powerful therapeutic effects, we also consider their subtle energy. Valerian is a rockstar when it comes to helping a person fall into a deep sleep, yet its impact is dulling to the mind and body.

Cayenne pepper is in the upper echelon of circulatory stimulants, yet its energy is so powerfully active that if it is overused, it could overstimulate or inflame.

The super herbs all possess what Ayurveda calls, sattvic energy. In other words, they encourage clarity, compassion, and calm, within the mind and body of the person who ingests them.

For this reason yogis, meditators, and healers have revered these super herbs for time immemorial. I invite you to join me for the special ‘Super Herbs’ Webcast. I invite you to study these herbs, integrate them into your life and allow them to work their healing magic within you.

Jai Dev gave me the Grateful Dead.

How does someone give you something they don’t or could never possibly possess.

I don’t think we ever share the thing that we think we’re actually sharing. What we share is the Love we have for whatever that thing is.

The angle at which Jai Dev asked me to perceive the Dead demonstrated the most mystical aspects of it. It was that angle of approach that made all the difference for me. It showed me that the slightest shift in perspective can transform music into invocation, a concert into a community, and fandom into devotion.

My interest turned obsession felt like a manner of hypnosis, but what often appears to be magic is merely a manifestation of the most fundamental laws of the Universe. This is the science of angles and triangles that Jai Dev talks about.

Jai Dev didn’t give me the Grateful Dead, just like Jai Dev doesn’t give anyone Kundalini Yoga. He does what any great teacher does and gives us an entry point- an angle at which we can approach our practice that gives it real power. In doing so, he presents us with the possibility of making it mean something.

From then on, it’s up to us what we do with it.
We give yoga the power to alter our lives by coming at it as a means of generating purpose. The alchemy happens when we give ourselves up to it to our fullest capacity. In that exchange, we receive the greatest gift… Us. Ourselves.

The encore of this series is like the design of a masterful setlist. We end exactly where we began.
In coming full circle we have arrived at an endless beginning. We may find ourselves in exactly the same place, but with a recognition that we have invariably evolved.

This is about reclaiming what we thought we’d lost but was inside us this whole time. You can call it whatever you want. The truth is we’ll never quite touch it with our words but that should never stop us from sharing it with the world.
Sat Nam, yogis. Go to LFA.yoga to dive into this class, and over a hundred more…
